Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was arrested for suspected illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained in connection with a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers also secured their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
Silver further mentioned an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
