France calls on citizens to evacuate Mali immediately amid Islamist petroleum restrictions

Fuel queues in Mali
Long queues have been forming at gas stations

France has delivered an urgent recommendation for its citizens in the landlocked nation to depart as soon as feasible, as jihadist fighters persist their blockade of the state.

The France's diplomatic corps counseled citizens to leave using airline services while they remain available, and to refrain from surface transportation.

Energy Emergency Intensifies

A recently imposed gasoline restriction on Mali, established by an al-Qaeda-linked group has overturned everyday activities in the capital, the urban center, and other regions of the surrounded West African country - a former French colony.

France's announcement came as the maritime company - the largest global shipping company - stating it was suspending its activities in the country, referencing the restriction and declining stability.

Jihadist Activities

The militant faction Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has produced the obstruction by attacking petroleum vehicles on main routes.

The country has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are transported by road from neighboring states such as Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire.

Global Reaction

Last month, the American diplomatic mission in Bamako announced that support diplomatic workers and their families would leave the nation during the crisis.

It stated the fuel disruptions had impacted the power availability and had the "potential to disrupt" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "uncertain fashions".

Political Context

The West African nation is currently ruled by a military junta led by Gen Assimi Goïta, who first seized power in a government overthrow in the past decade.

The armed leadership had popular support when it took power, vowing to address the extended stability issues caused by a independence uprising in the northern region by Tuareg communities, which was later co-opted by jihadist fighters.

International Presence

The international peace mission and France's military had been stationed in 2013 to deal with the growing rebellion.

Each have left since the military assumed control, and the security leadership has hired Russian mercenaries to address the insecurity.

However, the militant uprising has persisted and significant areas of the northern and eastern zones of the state remain away from official jurisdiction.
